  Optus said the attack captured information on as many as 9.8 million users. The data accessed by the hackers included customers' names, birthdays, phone numbers and email addresses, as well as some identification numbers.

  However, Optus said customers' passwords and banking information were not leaked. The purpose of the hack is unclear and no ransom demand has been received, and police and the Australian government are investigating.

  The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission warned that affected customers may be at risk of identity theft, "Optus customers should take immediate steps to protect all of their accounts, especially banking and financial accounts. They should also be on the lookout for unusual account activity. and be more vigilant about contacting scammers.”
