A few days ago, Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and Singapore's Keppel Group Marine Division (Keppel O&M) announced that they will use AR/VR smart glasses for remote inspections.

The disruption of numerous offshore operations due to the ongoing pandemic forced the company to leverage XR solutions. Workers will use the devices to gain real-time support and AR-driven workflows, including AI, digital twins, and other emerging technologies, through its novel testbed.

Keppel O&M teamed up with M1 to test an application for smart glasses, leveraging M1's 5G high-speed and low-latency connectivity for faster, more efficient responses. Similar projects at the company's parent company aim to reduce emissions, physical resources and operating costs for multinational companies to meet sustainable development goals.

Keppel O&M's smart glass solution will provide real-time data to the control room using camera lenses, microphones, mobile and WiFi connections, and speakers.

Chris Ong, CEO of Keppel O&M, said: “As a provider of leading solutions for the maritime industry, Keppel O&M is delighted to be working with M1 to enhance shipyard operations and safety with digital technologies. During the pandemic, safety management measures have limited physical inspections and On-site investigation, we are the first to use smart glasses to formally conduct remote inspections of new ships with classification societies.”

He added that his company will expand the use cases of new technologies to deliver projects and facilitate yard operations, as well as adding digital solutions capabilities to customers under its Future Yards plan, which aims to facilitate the digital transformation of products and services .

Manjot Singh Mann, CEO of M1, said his company is delighted to partner with Keppel O&M on a trial smart glasses scheme to empower the maritime industry in Singapore. "Through the M1's powerful 5G network, Smart Glasses can provide a high-bandwidth immersive AR/VR environment capable of delivering highly detailed real-time information to the user and control center."

Leveraging these technologies will also allow companies to scale and replicate future operations to improve efficiency "across businesses and industries."

It is reported that IMDA is responsible for building Singapore's 5G ecosystem, hoping to build more and more use cases and accelerate digital transformation for local and global enterprises in Singapore.

Liu Quanhong, CEO of IMDA, said: "Singapore will continue to drive innovation through cutting-edge technologies such as 5G, and we are delighted to be working with our industry partners to unlock the true impact of 5G. We look forward to seeing how 5G will benefit our businesses and consumers alike. new and exciting ways.”

The news comes as several major remote operations companies are exploring potential new use cases for the shipping and remote operations sectors to streamline the processes needed to ensure logistical connectivity across the ocean, rail and trucking industries.
