Facebook parent company Meta Platforms today asked a judge to force Snap to provide some necessary data to help Meta fend off an antitrust lawsuit by the U.S. government.

Meta said in a California federal court filing that Snap, the parent company of photo-sharing app Snapchat, should hand over some of the data Meta needs to help Meta refute the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) allegations that Meta has a monopoly on "personal social networking services."

Meta said it made a data request to Snap more than five months ago, including the number of Snap users and the amount of time users spent on the Snapchat app. These data help to evaluate Meta's market share.

But Meta said in court filings today: “After months of delays, Snap refused to provide the vast majority of documents Meta requested. For example, refusing to provide key information about competition in the marketplace, which was a key issue in Meta’s case. ."

Snap said in a court filing: "Meta's request for data should be dismissed because it is too broad and onerous. The documents Meta requested cover nearly every division, every product, and Almost any business."

In December 2020, the FTC sued Meta, accusing Meta of violating antitrust laws by acquiring photo-sharing site Instagram and messaging app WhatsApp. The FTC said at the time that Meta had illegally maintained its monopoly in the personal social networking market through years of anticompetitive behavior.
