South Korea's "Seoul News" said on the 21st that the first meeting of the "chip quadrilateral alliance" led by the United States with the nature of containing China will be held early next week. The meeting will be conducted by video, with the participation of officials at director level or reviewer level from the United States, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

According to the report, the United States is trying to contain the semiconductor industry in mainland China by seeking all parties in semiconductor talent training, research and development cooperation, and diversification of the semiconductor supply chain through the "chip quadrilateral alliance". It is expected that at this meeting, the Quartet will discuss the future agenda in the general direction. Previously, the South Korean government announced its intention to participate in the "Chip Quartet Alliance" meeting, but as the group was interpreted as an anti-China group, the controversy grew, and the South Korean government later changed its tune and said it was participating in a "preparatory meeting." Since the first meeting is likely to participate in the follow-up meeting, the South Korean government's move is considered to have actually decided to participate in the "chip quadrilateral alliance."

Previously, there was speculation that the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act excluded South Korean electric vehicles from subsidies, raising questions in South Korea about the U.S.-led restructuring of the international supply chain. South Korea can negotiate with the United States on the “Inflation Reduction Act” by participating in the “Chip Quartet”, but it is unlikely from the fact that South Korea’s separation from the U.S.-led semiconductor supply chain may cause damage to its own semiconductor companies.

South Korea's "NEWS 1" website said on the 21st that the semiconductor industry generally believes that the future of South Korea's semiconductor exports to China is bleak. Statistics show that South Korea's semiconductor exports to China in August were US$10.782 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 7.8%, the first negative growth in 26 months. There is a view that under the circumstance of the United States containing China, South Korea needs to have the wisdom to never give up the Chinese market even in the face of US retaliation.
