Game: German video game sales reach 4.5 billion euros in the first half of 2022
German gaming market hits headwinds
After the significant increase in sales of games and corresponding hardware in recent years, the growth rate in the first half of 2022 will slow down significantly. While the German games market grew by 22% in the first six months of 2021, it was only up 2% in the same period a year later. According to this, the sales of computer and video games and gaming hardware in the first six months of 2022 are about 4.5 billion euros.
Most Germans have bought or used game-related pop culture products
More than 6 in 10 Germans (62%) have watched a movie or series, or bought a toy, book or clothing based on a gaming brand. In game-based films, that's nearly half of Germans (48%). But the consumption of game soundtracks and TV series is also particularly frequent.
Next Generation Mobile Games
Smartphones have become one of the most successful gaming platforms in the world. Nearly 4 in 10 gamers (38%) in Germany are increasingly playing games on mobile devices. The dramatic increase in the quality of gaming apps also leads one-third of gamers in Germany (33%) to believe that mobile esports on smartphones will play an increasingly important role in the future.
19 million Germans believe gaming helps mental health
When it comes to health, Germans are confident in gaming: a total of 19 million Germans believe that computer and video games help mental health. Recognition is particularly high among young people: Nearly half (46%) of 16- to 24-year-olds say gaming helps with mental health. Gamers in Germany recognize the potential of gaming, especially when it comes to memory training (78%), relaxation (75%) and increased happiness (60%).
