Japanese mobile operator SoftBank Corp. and SoftBank Vision Fund-backed Singaporean start-up Carro has reached a partnership to launch a service that allows users to use second-hand goods in Japan for a flat fee. car.

The two companies formed a joint venture called Carro Japan with a 51%:49% stake, with SoftBank holding the majority. The service went live on Tuesday.

Carro's artificial intelligence program is able to quote subscription rates based on the vehicle's pricing history and other factors. According to SoftBank, customers will pay about 20 percent less than what they would pay to subscribe to a new car.

Carro Japan will start with a B2B service, but they will consider launching a service for general users.

Due to supply chain disruptions, wait times for new car deliveries in Japan have stretched to half a year or more. These circumstances have exacerbated consumer demand for used cars. Data from USS, Japan's largest used car auction platform, showed that the average transaction price of a used car in August this year soared 29 percent compared with a year ago.

SoftBank is now looking to grow its non-telco business as its mobile unit struggles after offering low-priced telecom packages in response to government pressure.

Founded in 2015, Carro operates in Singapore, Thailand and other Southeast Asian markets. The startup has streamlined used car sales on its platform with artificial intelligence-assisted pricing and sales. The company completed a $360 million round of financing last year, led by SoftBank Group’s Vision Fund.
