Larger than a hard drive, Samsung plans to launch 1TB single DDR5 memory in 2024
as an essential hardware for computers, the larger the memory capacity, the better. Recently, Samsung and AMD's memory experts held a communication meeting to discuss Samsung's development in DDR5 memory, including the issue of DDR5 memory capacity.
Compared with the previous DDR4, DDR5 memory reduces the voltage to 1.1V, the frequency can reach more than 7200MHz, the number of banks has doubled to 32, and the number of prefetched bits has also doubled to 16n. Samsung plans to increase the memory core capacity to 32Gb and the number of stack layers to 8H in 2023. In 2024, Samsung plans to launch a 1TB single DDR5 memory, which will use 32 8-Hi 32GB stacks for server platforms released in 2024-2025.
In addition to the capacity increase, Samsung also plans to further increase the speed of DDR5 memory. Samsung PPT shows that it will release DDR5-7200 in 2025, and its transfer rate is expected to reach 10,000+MT/s.
it was previously reported that Samsung is developing DDR6 memory, which will use MSAP packaging technology and is expected to achieve a transfer rate of about 12800Mbps. For DDR6 memory, it should be relatively easy to reach 1TB on a single stick. But now it seems that Samsung may implement a single 1TB design in the DDR5 era.
Although a single 1TB cost is too high for consumers, capacity is more important for server platforms. At present, the EPYC 7004 series of Zen4 architecture can achieve 96 large cores or 128 small cores, which means that its demand for memory is getting higher and higher.
