Tesla CEO Elon Musk (Elon Musk) said today that his goal is to have self-driving technology ready by the end of the year, and in the United States, even in the Wide release in Europe.

Musk told an energy conference in Norway today that he is currently focused on two things: SpaceX's Starship and self-driving Tesla electric cars.

"I'm currently focused on two technologies that I hope to complete by the end of this year. First is putting our 'Starship' into orbit and then getting Tesla cars to drive themselves," he said.

Musk also added: "Autonomous driving technology will have to be widely rolled out in the U.S. at least and possibly Europe (by the end of the year), depending on regulatory approval."

"Starship" is a new generation of SpaceX's launch vehicle, and its ultimate goal is to replace the current main rocket "Falcon 9" and perform cargo missions that will eventually carry astronauts to the moon and Mars. As planned, the "Starship" will conduct its first orbital launch in 2022.

Earlier in the day, Musk also said that the world must continue to extract oil and gas to maintain civilization, while also developing sustainable energy sources. "In fact, in the short term we also need to use oil and gas, otherwise civilization will collapse," he said.

When asked if Norway should continue drilling for oil and gas, Musk said: "I think there is a need for some additional exploration at the moment. One of the biggest challenges facing the world right now is: the transition to sustainable energy and a sustainable economy. It will take decades to complete."
