Micron Technology Inc. announced Thursday that it plans to invest $15 billion by 2030 to build a new cutting-edge memory manufacturing plant in Boise, Idaho.

It is reported that this will be the first memory chip manufacturing plant built in the United States in 20 years, and it is also the largest private investment project in the history of Idaho. Micron said it would focus on supplying memory chips for businesses in the U.S. home market, including automobiles and data centers.

This is the first of several investments Micron plans to make in the U.S. after the passage of the Chip and Science Act (the "Chip Act"), and it is also the company's global investment of more than $150 billion in manufacturing over the next decade. and part of an R&D plan that includes investing $40 billion by 2030 to build memory manufacturing plants in the U.S. in multiple phases.

Micron said in a statement that co-locating the new manufacturing facility with the research and development center at the company's headquarters will improve operational efficiency, accelerate technology deployment, and reduce time-to-market. However, Micron did not provide details on the capacity of the new factory or what chips it will produce.

In addition, with the benefits offered by the Chip Act, as well as incentives from Idaho and support from the governor, Micron expects the new factory to create more than 17,000 jobs by 2030, including nearly 2,000 jobs in Direct employment opportunities at Micron Technology.

On the 9th of this month, US President Biden officially signed the "Chip Act" worth 280 billion US dollars, of which more than 52 billion US dollars were aimed at the semiconductor field. Earlier it was reported that SK Hynix, one of the world's largest memory chip giants, has also planned to build an advanced chip packaging factory in the United States, and will break ground around the first quarter of next year.

"Micron's announcement today is another major victory for the United States," Biden said in an updated statement. "We will manufacture electric vehicles, chips, fiber optics and other critical components in the United States."
