local time Monday, the US streaming media giant Netflix announced that it will open a game development studio of its own in Finland.

In November 2021, Netflix opened up a new business and entered the mobile gaming market for the first time. This is the first time Netflix has set up its own game development studio. In the past year, Netflix spent $72 million to acquire Finnish game development company Next Games, as well as three external game development companies.

Currently, Netflix offers more than 20 mobile games for video members to download, and by the end of 2022, Netflix plans to increase the number to 50. The game products currently launched by Netflix include "Stranger Things: 1984", "The Soldier", etc. The game "The Soldier" is derived from an original TV series broadcast by Netflix.

Netflix's expansion into gaming is still in its early stages, and as of August, Netflix doesn't have many gamers. According to a survey by mobile internet market research firm Apptopia, less than one percent of Netflix's 220 million video members worldwide actively play Netflix games on a daily basis.

In the face of press questions about its game market strategy, Netflix officials did not comment in time.

Netflix is a world-renowned online video platform. However, in recent quarters, as market competition has intensified, Netflix's video membership has experienced an unprecedented loss and decline. Netflix decided to enter the game market, using free game studios to develop exclusive games and increase video membership stickiness. It is reported that before this new studio opening, Netflix has already acquired some game development studios, including "Night School Studio" and "Boss Fight Entertainment".

Amir Rahimi, Netflix's vice president of game development studios, said in a statement that the Netflix game business is still in its infancy, and there is still a lot of work to be done before it can be available to players on the Netflix platform. We deliver an excellent gaming experience.

Rahimi said it takes several years to develop a game, and it's reassuring that Netflix is steadily building the foundation of a game development studio in its fledgling first year.

According to Netflix's previous statement, the games launched in the future will not have embedded advertisements, and there will be no in-game purchase consumption. Existing video membership users will see game products available for download in the Netflix client, but after these games are downloaded, they need to be installed as separate applications on their mobile phones.
