Apple abandons plans to increase iPhone production due to slump in demand
Sina Technology News Beijing time on the morning of September 28th, according to reports, people familiar with the matter said that due to the decline in demand, Apple abandoned the iPhone production increase plan.
Apple has told suppliers to cancel an increase in assembly of the iPhone 14 lineup to 6 million units in the second half of this year, people familiar with the matter said. The company plans to make 90 million phones during the period, roughly on par with last year's levels and in line with Apple's original forecast this summer.
Demand for the pricier iPhone 14 Pro models is stronger than for entry-level models, the people said. At least one Apple supplier is shifting production capacity from lower-priced iPhones to higher-end models, they added.
An Apple spokesman declined to comment.
It is reported that Apple raised its sales forecast in the weeks before the iPhone 14 launch, and some suppliers have already begun to prepare for a 7% increase in orders.
But the smartphone market is expected to shrink 6.5% this year to 1.27 billion units, according to market tracker IDC.
