Released tens of thousands of VR headsets and acquired three game developers, Zuckerberg continues the dream of the metaverse
On Tuesday, US local time (October 12, Beijing time), Meta announced a blockbuster product "Meta Quest Pro" at its annual conference "Connect 2022", which is an advanced version of the previously released product Quest.
According to Meta, the headset is the company's most advanced product yet, and it's a whole new way of working, creating and collaborating. Of course, it's not cheap: the starting price is set at $1,499.99 (about 10,748 yuan).
With the Quest 2, users can only view the world outside the device in black and white, but the new $10,000 headset allows users to view their physical surroundings in full color, enabling high-resolution mixed reality (MR).
Compared with the previous Quest 2, the Quest Pro uses a more advanced pancake lens, and the optical stack is reduced by more than 40%; the advanced VR LCD display technology increases the pixel density by 37%, and the color gamut is also 1.3 times that of the Quest 2. In addition, the interpupillary distance adjustment range of the device is 55-75 mm, which helps users achieve a better visual experience and reduce eye fatigue.
In terms of performance configuration, the Quest Pro uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ chip, with 10 advanced VR/MR sensors, spatial audio, 256GB of memory and 12GB of RAM.
According to media reviews, the Quest Pro can easily be placed on a person's head, and thanks to the battery being moved to the back, the Quest Pro feels at least more comfortable than its predecessors.
But the product also has a weakness that cannot be ignored: the Quest Pro has a reduced battery life compared to the Quest 2, which lasts between one to two hours on a single charge, and then takes about two hours to recharge. This may make it less attractive.
According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the VR device is aimed at enthusiasts, professionals and business users who want to get work done in the Metaverse. But as far as the actual situation is concerned, it will take time to verify whether VR devices at this price level can be accepted by consumers.
In addition to the release of the hardware itself, the cooperation between Meta and Microsoft is another highlight of this conference.
Meta announced that it has struck deals with Microsoft, Accenture and others to market the Quest Pro as a simulation training device, 3D design tool or virtual meeting room, among other uses. Meta has struck a new partnership with Microsoft that will integrate Microsoft Windows App, Teams, and more with Meta's Metaverse hardware. Microsoft CEO Nadella also announced in the live broadcast that Xbox cloud gaming will be coming to Meta Quest.
Additionally, Meta announced the acquisition of three game developers: Camouflaj, Armature and Twisted Pixel. Officials have yet to reveal what the teams are doing, but Meta says it's excited to work with these makers to bring games to VR.
Data analysis agency StrategyAnalytics predicts that by 2024, the market stock of Metaverse devices will double from the current level to 100 million units. In the second half of this year, a number of leading companies in the industry have released new VR products, including Meta, Pico acquired by ByteDance, and Sony.
To be sure, the release of the VR device signifies Zuckerberg's continued commitment and enthusiasm for the "metaverse." In February this year, Meta first announced the related performance of the Metaverse business in its financial report. The business is collectively known as FRL (Reality Labs, Facebook Reality Lab), including hardware and software related to AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality). and content. According to Meta’s second-quarter 2022 financial report, Reality Labs’ revenue was US$452 million, a year-on-year increase of 48.2%, but the loss amounted to US$2.802 billion.
In an interview with technology media The Verge, Zuckerberg admitted that he does not expect meaningful gains from the Metaverse in a few years, but still believes that VR and AR devices are the next major computing platforms, and he hopes to become a The people driving this shift.
