Snap settles Illinois privacy lawsuit for $35 million
According to reports, Snapchat parent company Snap settled a privacy class action lawsuit in Illinois for $35 million.
The plaintiffs argued that the Snap filter violated the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act. Users who have used Snap filters from November 17, 2015 to the present may receive compensation. According to media estimates, individuals may be able to get $58-$117 in reparations.
Snap argued that its AR-effect Lenses did not violate BIPA because it did not collect biometric data, which is the only data that can be directed to a specific individual.
The Illinois privacy law also targets companies like Facebook and Google. At the beginning of the year, Google settled a lawsuit in Illinois for $100 million, mainly related to the facial recognition feature of Google Photos.
