Intel is reported to plan large-scale layoffs, which may involve thousands of people, and the proportion of some business units may reach 20%
people familiar with the matter revealed that due to the slowdown in the PC market, Intel plans to launch large-scale layoffs, the number of people involved may reach thousands.
It is reported that the layoffs will be announced as early as this month, and some departments, including the sales and marketing business group, may reach about 20% of the staff.
It is worth mentioning that Intel will release its third-quarter earnings report on October 27, which coincides with the layoffs disclosed by people familiar with the matter.
As of July, Intel had 113,700 employees.
PC processors are Intel's main business, but demand in this market is facing a severe decline. At the same time, it is difficult to regain market share lost by competitors such as AMD.
Intel just cut its 2022 sales target in July after it missed market expectations in its fiscal second quarter, missing its previous target by $11 billion. Analysts expect the company's third-quarter revenue to fall nearly 20%.
Intel once had a profit margin of around 60%, but that enviable figure has now shrunk to around 15%.
Intel acknowledged on its second-quarter conference call that they may make some adjustments to the business to improve profits. "We have also compressed core expenses for 2022 and expect to take additional steps in the second half of the year," CEO Pat Gelsinger said.
Intel declined to comment on the layoffs.
