Amazon hits $1 billion claim in UK for eccentric promotion of its own products
Amazon is in trouble again in the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom believes that Amazon favors its own products and abuses its market monopoly position, and claims 900 million pounds (about 1 billion US dollars) against it.
British consumer advocacy group Julie Hunter is preparing to launch a class-action lawsuit against Amazon on behalf of UK consumers who have shopped on Amazon since October 2016.
Law firm Hausfeld, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of Julie Hunter, said Amazon violated competition law by using a secretive and ego-biased algorithm to promote its products through a "Buy Box" feature.
"The Buy Box does not recommend based on price and quality, but favors products sold by Amazon itself, or retailers who pay FBA," Hunter charged in the statement. "As for other sellers, no matter how good their products are, are excluded."
In response, an Amazon spokesman said: "Such accusations are unfounded, and we are confident that the legal process will make everything clear."
The lawsuit will be brought to the Competition Appeal Tribunal in London by the end of this month, with permission to proceed.
