according to reports, people familiar with the matter said today that Apple will launch its long-awaited mixed reality (MR) headset next year, which will support functions such as iris scanning and let rival Meta The latest products are far behind.

According to two people who helped Apple develop the MR headset, Apple's MR headset supports iris scanning, which can scan the wearer's iris. This means that as long as users wear the headset, they can quickly log into their accounts. Obviously, this feature is especially suitable for multiple users using the same device. Additionally, the feature will allow users to make quick payments through an MR headset, much like the iPhone allows people to confirm payments by scanning their fingerprints or face.

As previously reported, Apple's MR headset will have 14 cameras, compared to Meta's latest headset, the Quest Pro, which was released earlier this week, with only 10 cameras. More cameras are meant to better capture the wearer's body movements for a more realistic presentation. Apple's MR headset includes two downward-facing cameras to capture the wearer's legs, a feature the Quest Pro doesn't have, the people said.

People involved in developing the Apple MR device also said the headset looks like a pair of ski goggles, unlike the Quest Pro, which looks like a black plastic face shield. The design of Apple's MR headset uses more mesh fabric, aluminum and glass, and the camera is more concealed than the Quest Pro. The Apple MR headset will be thinner and lighter than the Quest Pro, which weighs 722 grams. In addition, the Apple headset will also provide the wearer with a feature that allows them to attach lenses for nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Adding iris scanning to MR headsets is in line with Apple's strategy to bring biometric authentication to consumer devices. In 2013, Apple introduced Touch ID fingerprint scanning technology in the iPhone. In 2017, facial ID scanning technology was introduced on the iPhone X.

Apple bought German startup SensoMotoric Instruments in 2017 to help develop the technology (iris scanning), the people said. By contrast, the Quest Pro, while equipped with an eye-tracking camera, doesn't support iris scanning.

One of the biggest technical challenges Apple faced in making the MR headset was balancing its features and battery life, according to people familiar with the matter. For example, one feature of the device could, in theory, become a burden on the battery: an outward-facing screen that would allow other people in the room to see the wearer's facial expressions.

But one developer said the screen could run at a lower refresh rate to save battery life, similar to how the always-on displays on newer versions of the Apple Watch and iPhones work. The lower the refresh rate, the less processing power is required to continuously update the screen.

According to previous reports, Apple's MR headset may cost around $3,000. By comparison, the Meta Quest Pro costs $1,499.
