Several US media recently reported that Apple plans to manufacture new iPhone models in India several months ahead of previous models. The US "Wall Street Journal" believes that this shows that the company is increasing production outside its traditional production base in China. Bloomberg said that although the move is intended to shorten the production time gap between China and India, it will not be synchronized as some people expect.

According to a report by Bloomberg on the 23rd, Apple plans to start manufacturing the iPhone 14 in India about two months after the release. Apple has traditionally released new models in September, and the upcoming iPhone 14 could be produced in India as early as late October or November, people familiar with the matter said. Previously, the production time for new iPhones in India was usually 6 to 9 months after the launch of the new product.

Bloomberg said it would be an important milestone for India if it can catch up with China's production of iPhones. India's "livemint" website also stated on the 24th that "Made in India" is now comparable to "Made in China". "I have no doubt that Apple has the ability to launch the latest mobile products in India," the Wall Street Journal quoted Indian Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajiv Chandrasekhar as saying that India's manufacturing industry is mature enough that any Smart companies are eager to enter the Indian market.

However, it is not easy for India to shorten the production time gap with China. One of the first challenges is secrecy. Apple typically goes to great lengths to keep new product details private, and enforcing the same strict secrecy in a second country has proven difficult. The strict safety controls and quarantine measures at Chinese factories are difficult to replicate, according to people familiar with the matter. Apple is also concerned that Indian customs officials routinely open packages to check that what's imported matches the declaration. This is another potential loophole in the product privacy program.

The challenges facing the supply chain will also be one of the obstacles, Bloomberg said. China is the country of origin for many of the iPhone's components, and strict quarantine measures complicate the process of shipping components through China. Moreover, there may also be problems with labor management in India. There have been two major incidents of labor unrest since Apple began assembling iPhones in India in 2017.
