Artificial intelligence found 20,000 "tax evasion" swimming pools in France, with a cumulative tax evasion of about 10 million euros
French law stipulates that private swimming pools must be reported to the tax department after completion. For example, there is a 30-square-meter swimming pool in the home, and an additional tax of 200 euros is paid every year, so many householders are reluctant to declare truthfully. According to a report by the French news network on the 29th, the country's tax authority found as many as 20,000 undeclared private swimming pools through an artificial intelligence identification system, with a cumulative tax evasion of about 10 million euros.
The artificial intelligence system can identify swimming pools from high-altitude images and check against the French government's land registry database, the report said. According to information released by the French tax authority, 20,356 unregistered private swimming pools have been successfully discovered in 9 regions in 2021. However, there have also been complaints of errors in the system, such as often mistaking solar panels for swimming pools, or difficulty identifying swimming pools hidden under awnings and tarps.
It is reported that there are about 3.2 million private swimming pools in France. As more and more people work from home due to the epidemic, the demand for private swimming pools has also surged. Because the new system has achieved good results, the French government plans to roll it out nationwide from September. The French Finance Agency estimates that the government will receive an additional 40 million euros in taxes next year after the nationwide rollout.
