Battery maker Propower Technology plans to build a Gigafactory for mass production of solid-state batteries in Europe.

According to a report by Reuters on September 5, Huineng Technology plans to invest 8 billion US dollars (about 55.5 billion yuan) to build a solid-state lithium battery production base. The plant will have a total capacity of 120 GWh and is expected to be fully completed within the next decade. If each new energy vehicle carries 50 KWh of electricity, the 120 GWh power battery can support 2.4 million new energy vehicles.

As mentioned in the above report, Accuracy Consulting has been entrusted by Propower Technology to select the site for the plant. Currently, four European countries, namely France, Germany, Poland and the United Kingdom, have been included in the shortlist.

Huineng Technology was established in Taiwan, China in 2006, focusing on the research and development and manufacturing of solid-state lithium batteries.

Solid-state lithium batteries are an important direction for the research and development of next-generation power batteries. It uses a solid electrolyte instead of the liquid electrolyte currently used in commercial lithium batteries. Solid electrolytes are generally non-flammable and therefore have higher safety. At the same time, the application of solid electrolytes makes it possible for solid-state batteries to use high-voltage electrode materials, thereby increasing the energy density of the battery, thereby increasing its cruising range as a power battery.

In July this year, Huineng Technology announced the plan to build the above-mentioned solid-state battery super factory, and said it was evaluating its location, and the final decision will be made in the first quarter of next year. The purpose of building the factory is to be close to customers and to provide products and services in a timely manner, according to Huineng Technology.

Due to immature technology and high production costs, it  is considered difficult to mass-produce solid-state batteries at this stage. In July this year , Li Hong, a researcher at the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the founder of Weilan New Energy, once said that according to the current development speed, all-solid-state batteries can reach the mass production standard of 10 GWh in 2026-2027 at the earliest.

Companies that have announced plans for mass production of solid-state batteries currently produce mostly solid-liquid mixed semi-solid batteries, which combine the ease of mass production of liquid batteries and the high safety of solid-state batteries.

Ganfeng Lithium (002460.SZ), Qingtao Energy, Weilan New Energy and other companies have disclosed this year that they have the ability to mass-produce semi-solid batteries and have models that can be carried. Last year, the production capacity of semi-solid-state batteries reached 1 GWh, and it plans to achieve mass production of all-solid-state batteries in 2024.

Proton Technology received US$326 million (about 2.26 billion yuan) in financing in October last year. Investors include Primavera Capital Group, SoftBank China Venture Capital, etc. The funds will be used in the next few years in Asia, Europe and the United States. U.S. capacity expansion.

In January this year, Propro announced that it had signed a cooperation agreement with Mercedes-Benz, part of German automaker Daimler Group, to build test vehicles over the next few years with jointly developed solid-state batteries. Propower Technology also mentioned that it will receive tens of millions of dollars in investment from Daimler Group, which will also take a seat on the company's board of directors.

Daimler Group Chief Technology Officer Markus Shafer said solid-state battery technology helps reduce the size and weight of batteries, which is why the company is partnering with battery makers such as Propower Technology. Mercedes-Benz's solid-state battery partners also include US start-up Factorial Energy.

In July this year, Propower Technology once again officially announced that the Vietnamese car brand VinFast invested tens of millions of dollars in Propower Technology. The two parties agreed that from 2024, Huineng Technology will supply solid-state batteries for VinFast. In the future, the two companies will also plan to set up a joint venture in Vietnam to build a solid-state battery factory.
