It is reported that the head of Tesla's legal affairs has left: once responsible for investigating procurement matters
according to reports, Tesla and the head of the legal department responsible for the internal investigation of the purchase order parted ways.
The head of Tesla's legal department, David Searle, left less than a month ago, people familiar with the matter said. Dinna Eskin, the company's deputy general counsel, has taken over.
Sale has been overseeing an internal investigation related to Omead Ofshar. Afshar is Tesla CEO Elon Musk's right-hand man, responsible for procuring critical materials through an intricate global supply chain. The investigation into a hard-to-get glass order has already led to the departure of several Tesla employees.
On Wednesday, Tesla tweeted that it denied Purcell's departure from the company, but did not disclose his current position. Musk, Purcell, Eskin and Tesla's head of human resources, Allison Arebalo, declined to comment.
Purcell, a former U.S. federal prosecutor, initially joined Tesla in 2021 as head of compliance, and his most recent Tesla titles were legal director and company secretary.
The change in Tesla's chief legal officer comes as Tesla faces a lawsuit from Twitter. Musk was sued by Twitter after initially announcing a $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, but later backing off on the grounds of a fake account. The case is expected to go to trial in mid-October.
Musk is currently the world's richest man with a personal wealth of about $267 billion. He sold nearly $7 billion in Tesla stock last week after his legal battle with Twitter escalated.
Eskin joined Tesla in 2017 as a senior business advisor, having previously served as assistant vice chancellor for policy and regulatory affairs at the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute, as well as a number of non-profit organizations affiliated with the school. Previously worked in the private sector for 4 years.
Searle took over as Tesla's head of legal late last year when former Tesla vice president of legal William Berry left. Berry then served as general counsel at cloud security firm Verkada.
Purcell's departure comes ahead of Tesla's Aug. 4 annual shareholder meeting at its Austin, Texas, headquarters. Several activist shareholders expressed concerns about the company's corporate governance at the meeting, where Tesla also announced plans for a stock split.
Since the last full-time general counsel, Jonathan Chang, left in December 2019, Tesla has changed at least four lead lawyers.
The company recently hired Derek Windham, a former HPE corporate governance expert, as senior director of corporate and security and deputy general counsel. The electric car maker has also recruited longtime oil and gas industry lawyer Michael Munro as its new compliance chief.
