Apple's iPhone 14 may support satellite communications?

On August 29, local time, Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo updated his investigation on the rumored iPhone 14’s support for satellite communication on Twitter, saying that satellite communication is one of the test items before the iPhone 14 is mass-produced, and Apple has completed hardware testing of this feature. . The satellite communication on the iPhone 14 is mainly for emergency SMS/voice services.

"Whether the iPhone 14 provides satellite communication services depends on whether Apple and the operator can negotiate a business model." Ming-Chi Kuo further pointed out that Apple has completed the hardware development of satellite communication in the iPhone 13, and the undetermined business model is the reason for the lack of support.

As for when the iPhone will provide satellite communication services, Ming-Chi Kuo said it is difficult to predict precisely. "But I believe it will happen eventually".

Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the increasing frequency of natural disasters and geopolitical conflicts in recent years may make emergency SMS/voice services via satellite communications a must-have feature on smartphones.

"MediaTek has demonstrated the satellite communication function on 5G mobile phone hardware. Huawei will hold a media conference on September 6 and release the new Mate50, which may provide emergency SMS services through satellite communication supported by the Beidou system." Guo Mingji said , MediaTek and Huawei's efforts are further proof that satellite communications may eventually become a must-have feature in smartphones, including the iPhone.

As for operators, Guo Mingji believes that the operator most likely to cooperate with Apple for satellite communication is Globalstar. "In the satellite communication service ecosystem, satellite communication operators like Globalstar have the highest barriers to entry and deserve high attention from investors."

Just after 0:00 on August 25th, Beijing time, Apple’s official account announced that it will hold an autumn press conference at 10:00 a.m. Pacific time on September 7th (1:00 a.m. Beijing time on September 8th) in the form of an online live broadcast.

Apple's invitation this time is quite "space sense". On the black background, the shining stars together form the Apple logo. Technology media The Verge speculates that the space theme may refer to Apple’s satellite connectivity feature, which uses satellites to make calls and send text messages. Last year, some analysts predicted that this feature would land on the iPhone 13, but it did not materialize in the end. Another speculation is that the shining stars may be hinting at the iPhone's new astrophotography capabilities.

In terms of new phones, Apple plans to release four iPhone 14 series models at this conference, including the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone Mini may be "cut off."

Ming-Chi Kuo previously predicted that the average selling price of the iPhone 14 series will increase by 15%, mainly because the two iPhone 14 Pro models are more expensive and have a higher proportion of shipments. Compared with the iPhone 13, the average selling price of the iPhone 14 series is expected to rise to $1,000 to $1,050. Not only the price, but also the minimum storage capacity or changing from the existing 128G to 256G, which also means an increase in price.
