Toyota Motor Corp has reached a settlement in the U.S. worth about $150 million over a fuel pump recall, according to Automotive News. The high-priced settlement is understood to be used to resolve a class-action lawsuit related to a recall involving 3.36 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

The recalled vehicles have a fuel pump defect that could cause the engine to stall. Owners have reported that the defect caused the vehicle to jolt, lose power and break down, especially at low speeds. Toyota has said it has received more reports of the problem in the warmer southern U.S.

Under the terms of the settlement, Toyota will extend the fuel pump warranty to 15 years or 150,000 miles (241,000 kilometers), whichever comes first. In addition, Toyota will provide owners with a free spare car as well as a tow truck option for repairs.

It is reported that the parties involved have reached a preliminary settlement around the agreement in Brooklyn federal court with the approval of a judge.

According to reports, the settlement covers dozens of Toyota and Lexus models produced between 2013 and 2020 that were equipped with the Denso low-pressure fuel pumps involved. According to reports, in the two years of 2020 and 2021 alone, more than 5.8 million vehicles worldwide have been recalled due to the defect.

Toyota-affiliated supplier Denso International America is also among the defendants, and while the company also agreed to settle, it has not admitted wrongdoing. Toyota said in a follow-up release, "We are pleased to resolve the lawsuit with the owners involved in this way, and the conclusion of the settlement further demonstrates Toyota's commitment to bringing a better user experience to owners."

Dee Miles, attorney for the plaintiffs, from Beasley Allen, said the settlement provided "comprehensive compensation " for car owners .

The lawyer said in an email, “Relevant experts are still analyzing the value of this settlement, but based on preliminary estimates, we expect the settlement to exceed $150 million.” In addition, in the process of reaching the settlement, The plaintiffs may pay up to $28.5 million in legal fees to their law firm.
