According to RIA Novosti local time on Thursday (September 8), at the 2022 Eastern Economic Forum, Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov said in an interview that although Apple has withdrawn from Russia, But the new iPhone 14 will be supplied to Russia on a parallel import mechanism, and Russians will have the opportunity to buy the new device.
Apple products are now on the parallel import list. Manturov previously said he planned to extend the parallel import mechanism to the full year of 2023.
The so-called parallel import mechanism, which authorizes importers to import foreign products without the permission of the trademark owner. The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade announced in May that it will launch a parallel import mechanism from now on and approve a list of parallel import products to protect the interests of consumers in Russia after companies from "unfriendly" countries and regions withdraw from the Russian market. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law in June making it legal for parallel imports to enter Russia.
Alexander Zhukov, a member of the Economic Policy Committee of the Russian Federation Council, explained that the purpose of passing the law on the legalization of parallel imports is to "reduce the increase in the price of imported goods due to the actions of unfriendly countries". The Economic Policy Committee of the Russian State Duma also pointed out that while protecting the interests of consumers in Russia, this bill will also generally promote the development of the Russian economy under sanctions.
Asked if new iPhone models would be allowed to enter Russia under a parallel import mechanism, and whether it would be an exception, Manturov replied: "Why not? If consumers want to buy these phones, then buy them. There will be such an opportunity.”
Apple held a special event for the fall of new products called "Super Look" yesterday. The new products announced at this conference include a new iPhone series, a reshaped AirPods Pro, and three new Apple Watches.
In March of this year, Apple announced that it would suspend product sales in Russia and restrict Apple Pay. But iPhones, MacBooks and other Apple products are still available in some stores in Russia, and retailers are selling leftover stocks of older models.
On Thursday morning, MTS, Russia's largest telecom operator, has started pre-sale of the new iPhone 14. MTS said delivery times are up to 120 days, and it reserves the right to cancel orders if import difficulties arise.
