PlayStation maker Sony announced today that it intends to start making mobile games designed for iPhone and Android devices by acquiring mobile game developer Savage Game Studios for an undisclosed amount.

Founded two years ago, Savage Game Studios is a mobile game development studio with offices in Helsinki, Finland and Berlin, Germany. The founders of Savage Game Studios have worked for companies like Rovio, Zynga and Wargaming, and Sony says the company has years of experience making some of the most popular mobile games.

Sony also said that its development of mobile games will not affect its work on console games, and will also bring new ways to interact with PlayStation content.

Mobile gaming efforts will be equally additive, offering more ways for more people to participate and working to attract new audiences unfamiliar with PlayStation and PlayStation games.

Not surprisingly, Savage Game Studios will join PlayStation Studios' newly established mobile division, which is independent of the existing console game division and focuses on making mobile-friendly AAA games based on new or existing PlayStation IP.

There's no word yet on what PlayStation Studios' mobile division will be working on first, but Savage Game Studios is understood to be working on a new yet-to-be-announced triple-A service-based action mobile game.
