Texas sues Google for illegally collecting user biometric information
According to reports, the US state of Texas announced a lawsuit against Google for illegally collecting biometric data without users' permission. Before that, Texas has sued some tech giants over online privacy.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement that Google collected a large amount of biometric information from Texas residents, including voiceprints and facial geometry records, through Google Photos, Google Assistant and other products.
Paxton believes that Google's arbitrary collection of Texas residents' personal information, including very sensitive information, is intolerable.
There is a technology that has attracted the attention of Texas in particular. It is the photo grouping technology used by Google Photos. The App will use this technology to analyze the facial features of the people in the photos, and then group the photos according to the people in the photos after processing. Texas believes that Google can obtain and store biometric information through personal characteristics for photos uploaded to the platform, and neither users nor non-users have the opportunity to choose whether to let Google collect such data.
In addition to Texas, many states in the United States are also very disgusted with such practices. They have legislation prohibiting the use of biometric information collected for commercial purposes without the user's permission. If violated, each can be fined up to 25,000 US dollars.
