Apple, too mismatched with Web3

Apple "doesn't like" Web3, but recently it is recruiting Web3 related talents.

On July 29, apple is looking for experts in Web3. It needs a creative director who is interested in interactive platform and Web3 and a content marketing director who understands Web3 technology.

This news is both reasonable and beyond.

It is reasonable that the five major technology companies in the United States are all deploying Web3. Among them, Amazon, Google and Microsoft are all "cloud giants" and naturally become the beneficiaries of Web3 prosperity (generally speaking, every Web3 startup company needs cloud services). Meta, on the other hand, began to lay out this track vigorously because it found the "strong connection" between Web3 and social networking. According to Hu Xiang's observation, at present, the largest social giants in China, the United States, Russia and Japan have laid out the Web3 track because NFT can bring "right value" to creators' content. As the "top player" in the global technology industry, Apple will not ignore Web3 technology and trend.

Beyond reason, apple is not born to like Web3, and there is no combination of "seeking common ground while reserving differences" in their values, ideas and business contacts.

One of the core concepts of Web3 is decentralization. Although Amazon, Google, Microsoft and meta are all centralized Internet giants, centralization is also hierarchical. Amazon and other cloud giants also advocate the "distributed concept". Most cloud giants will put their servers in multiple places. They agree that absolute centralization has great risks. More importantly, these four technology giants have found business integration points with Web3 and explored greater business opportunities, so they are not so exclusive of Web3, but actively embrace it.

Apple seems to be "out of tune" with Web3. Apple's IOS system is more closed, while Google's Android system is more open. At present, almost all Web3 innovations related to mobile phones have turned to Android rather than IOS; Android mobile phone manufacturers, not apple. Recently, Solana mobile stack, a mobile software made by Web3 giant Solana, is based on Android system. No matter Samsung, HTC, nothing and other mobile phone manufacturers, they also develop based on Android system.

Google's Android and Web3 are "like each other" in the operating system, and Amazon cloud, Google cloud, Microsoft cloud, Huawei cloud and Alibaba cloud are all "gossip" with Web3. Apple has become the only technology giant that can't find a big business connection with Web3.

What makes Apple more uneasy is that, unlike other technology giants, Apple's market share is more likely to be reduced due to the prosperity of Web3.

People often regard the public chain as a cloud database such as AWS. The wallet is equivalent to an operating system, and DAPP is equivalent to an app. However, although both public chain and AWS are databases, they have no direct competitive relationship; Wallet is equivalent to the operating system, but Web3 wallet and Android system are not directly competitive; DAPP and app, because the number and time of users are relatively fixed, have direct competition in this sense, but Facebook, instagram, twitter and other apps have found a combination point with Web3, in a relationship of both competition and cooperation.

Apple seems to be inherently incompatible with Web3. Because the ecosystem is relatively closed, Web3 manufacturers are cooperating with Android system to constantly seize Apple's market share; Because there are only private cloud services, but no public cloud services, we can only see that Amazon, Google, Microsoft and other cloud businesses have grown due to the increase of Web3 companies, and there is nothing we can do.

More interestingly, Web3 can hardly overthrow the rule of the public cloud, but it is possible to get more users on the personal private cloud. At present, some domestic manufacturers have launched decentralized personal private cloud services. This has formed a direct competitive relationship with Apple's business.

Web3 seems to have a big gap with apple in all aspects, but its existence seems to be born of restraining the development of apple. This makes Apple more "disgusted" with Web3 technology. Matthew ball, executive partner of venture capital firm epylion Co., believes that Apple may be strangling the development of the metauniverse based on Web3.

Ball said that although apple seemed able to "thrive in the next era of more immersive computing", its control over distribution could hinder the development of the entire industry. He said that apple did not allow crypto based virtual worlds, and they successfully prevented a specific type of disruptive innovation and category. By avoiding the complex virtual world, the technology giant is exerting inappropriate influence on "what is available and what is unavailable".

Ball said that apple made a lot of profits by controlling the software on its platform through the API or application programming interface (acting as a bridge between the two applications). All applications on Apple IOS interface need to be approved by apple and must pay apple a fee. All Web3 applications appear in the form of DAPP, and they try not to be controlled by apple.

Not only Web3 company, but also Apple's strength sometimes makes other Internet giants "dare not say anything". Whether it's Amazon, Google, Tencent or meta, their basic disk, that is, services for individual users, is mainly displayed on mobile phones in the form of apps. While Apple has an absolute market share in mobile phones, it is difficult for these internet giants to disagree with Apple's rules and fees.

Generally speaking, when users download an app, Apple needs to draw 30% of the "Apple tax" and developers get 70%. In the app (some need it, some don't), users pay, and apple still needs to draw 30%. Even if it is better than Tencent (the number of users is no less than Apple), it can only follow Apple's rules in the process of fighting against apple.

The enemy of the enemy is a friend, which has also become the basis for the cooperation between Internet companies and Web3 companies. Moreover, there is cooperation between the two companies.

Of course, apple itself is also trying to integrate business with Web3. From the perspective of the current two jobs of apple, one is to try to combine Web3 with AR and VR. In this attempt, HTC made a meta universe mobile phone in June 2022, combining NFT and cryptocurrency with mobile phones and VR; Another possibility is to combine streaming media related businesses with NFT. The creator economy based on NFT has been recognized by more and more video and audio giants. Both Disney and Netflix have made greater efforts to try and explore this year.

However, even so, an embarrassing situation is that when Amazon, Google, Microsoft, meta, IBM and other technology giants have found the combination of core business and Web3. Only apple alone became the forgotten one in the development of Web3.
